In Tyler’s words:
Having the opportunity to be mentored by Wes, who was an IT Director at our company, was a transformative experience that spanned about five months. Our sessions were initially set up through a formal company program and continued informally after his departure, a testament to his dedication. Wes' guidance was instrumental in honing my approach to leadership, particularly in managing teams, navigating challenging conversations, and transitioning into supervisory roles. More than that, he imparted the importance of finding purpose in my work and achieving a healthy work-life balance, which has significantly enhanced my quality of life.
Under Wes’ mentorship, I gained not just practical skills but also clarity about my career path. His personalized advice, grounded in his extensive experience, helped me identify the steps needed to achieve my professional goals. Wes' approach to mentorship was exceptional; he communicated in a way that was both engaging and deeply caring, making each lesson resonate on a personal level. His ability to tailor his guidance to my specific challenges not only lent credibility to his advice but also made a lasting impact on me professionally and personally.
Wes' unique qualities as a mentor, especially his effective communication style and personalized approach, have left a profound mark on my development. His mentorship has been a cornerstone of my growth, helping me navigate the complexities of the IT field with confidence and purpose. I am immensely grateful for his guidance and support, which have been pivotal in shaping my career trajectory.
In Matt’s words:
Wes was my direct manager for five years. Based on our time together I can only say: Wes is exactly the person you would want to work with for coaching or to solve IT challenges. He is a clear communicator, insightful planner, and decisive leader.
When I began working with him, Wes took the time to find out how I needed to learn. With a keen understanding of situational leadership, he tailored his coaching style to maximize my growth. Under his mentorship I grew from a relatively junior individual contributor to a senior member of the team and a people manager.
In addition to his coaching ability, Wes is also undoubtedly an excellent IT leader who would be helpful to any organization looking to tackle a challenging problem. With an eye for detail, strong project planning and stakeholder management skills, and an ability to balance best practice and business need, Wes excels in designing elegant solutions to complex problems.
In Tenzin’s words:
Wes was previously my manager and director while at edX. During that time, working with Wes was one of the most fulfilling moments in my career where I felt truly in sync with individual/team expectations, and company goals.
His leadership approach was a breath of fresh air, combining modern practices with traditional corporate standards. Breaking down silos and helping me fully grasp what IT’s function was in terms of the business. Wes always emphasized professional development, allocating time weekly to study or learn a new skill.
When it came to projects, Wes always provided guidance first and then allowed me to work autonomously while always reinforcing the notion that he believed in me. This confidence Wes had in my abilities was the building block needed to break away from the fear of failure.
From coding Python scripts to working with Google APIs, Wes was always available to provide lessons on areas I had questions with. Through his guidance, I became a subject-matter expert in services/systems that I struggled with initially (Jamf, Intune, OneLogin, Atlassian to name a few).
My recent successes are a direct correlation to the foundations I laid while working with Wes.
In Rob’s words:
Wes helped me grow my career with his mentorship. Working with him, I progressed from entry level IT helpdesk to running my own IT department as an IT Manager. Wes helped me develop concrete skills with the latest technologies, as well as how to operate in business culture. I learned way more under him that I would have learned in any degree program.
